Terminology of the sector
- HYPOALLERGENIC
The adjective “hypoallergenic” related to a laundry product, means that has been developed a formula that decreases to a minimum the risks of allergies, i.e. it doesn’t contain all that substances that can cause an allergic reaction and irritate skin.
Any product can be defined as “anallergic”, probably only water can be considered anallergic, because our immune system could recognize as “stranger and dangerous” any external substance and cause an allergic reaction. - PATCH TEST
An allergy test is a test carried out under the supervision of a dermatologist in which some samples of a substance are applied on the skin for 48h or 72h (or some samples of garments washed with some products) in order to verify possible allergic reactions. For hypoallergenicity tests, these tests are executed with dermatological controls after 72h of samples’ application. Thanks to these tests it is possible to have a predictive result of hypoallergenicity of the product.
For whom is it advisable the use of hypoallergenic products for laundry?
Hypoallergenic products for laundry are ideal for people who suffer of dermatitis, cutaneous hypersensitivity, for whom has particular allergies or for babies. Knowing the characteristics of detergents and softeners with which we wash the garments in direct contact with our skin can really make the difference!
How can I understand if a product is really hypoallergenic?
It is important to read carefully the label of the product, in order to verify that the hypoallergenicity test has been realised respecting quality standards that can make it safe and appropriate for the most sensitive skins.
Moreover, we should choose products in which all the ingredients used are indicated (similar to what happens for cosmetic products) so that we can verify the use of particular substances of which we could be allergic.
One mustn’t be misled by intriguing packagings which promise security without guarantee a real personal grooming.
Which are the most irritating substances for sensitive skins?
- Generic perfumes
Fragrances are added to the formulas in order to remain on garments even after the washing cycle and give them a pleasant fragrance. For this reason they can increase the risk of allergic reactions and skin sensitivity. Moreover, fragrances can contain some substances recognized as sensitising/allergenic, that have to be obligatory indicated on the product - Chemical additives
In order to make more powerful some products for laundry, some additives are added to the formula to emphasize some features. These additives are rinsed a little and they remain on garments (such as optical brighteners) - Heavy metals
Into the generic products for laundry you could find some traces of Nickel, Cobalt and Chrome. The presence of these metals can create problems on sensitive skins.
